Masters and PhD Scholarships Tenable at Makerere University, Kyambogo University and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology

Masters and PhD Scholarships Tenable at Makerere University, Kyambogo University and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology

Call for Applications for Masters and PhD Scholarships Tenable at Makerere University (MAK), Kyambogo University (KYU) and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in collaboration with University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) under The APPEAR Academic Partnership Project ‘Environmental Chemistry for Sustainable Development (ECSDevelop)’

Project Background

East Africa faces serious environmental challenges in relation to atmospheric, soil and water pollution. The Lake Victoria basin and the Albertine Graben have not been spared either. The Lake basin, which is being shared by Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya has been undergoing rapid urbanization in the last three decades; the high population density, rapid industrial growth and waste-water treatment plants in vicinity of Lake Victoria basin have been reported as sources of environmental contaminants such as plastic debris and endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). It is expected that both Lake Victoria and Nile River act as sinks for pollutants e.g., microplastics (MPs); however, the extent of these interactions and MPs entrapment rates will be governed by many physical, biological and chemical factors. In addition, the project explores L. Victoria point source pollution identification and remediation. Since most of the pollutants on the Kenyan side of lake have been identified, stratified sampling of known pollutants will be done and mechanisms of removing the pollutants at its source determined. A policy brief will be prepared and made available to concerned authorities for action

Masters and PhD Scholarships 2022

Furthermore, Uganda has established an ambitious agenda for its future with its 2040 Vision acting as a blueprint and framework envisaging a middle- income economy, and its hopes for infrastructural and social development are hinged on revenues expected from oil production in the Albertine Graben. In 2013, Uganda’s oil reserves were estimated to be 3.5 billion barrels, and were expected to yield at least USD $2 billion per year for 30 years once oil production commences. The Albertine Graben, covering an exploration area of about 25,000 km2contains substantial oil seepages that lead to environmental degradation and thus impose threats to people’s health through food chains. Many bioremediation and chemical oxidation studies have been carried out but with limited remediation efficiency. In this project, candidates will explore multifaceted application of nanotechnology in the field of bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons. Understanding the interaction between the contaminant, the microorganism, and the nanomaterials is of crucial importance since positive and negative effects may beproduced.

Project Objectives/Outcomes:

  • It is expected that through this project, we shall;
  • Exploit regional capacities to jointly streamline existing curricula on environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology.
  • Develop a novel cost-effective state-of-the-art technology to track and clean up contaminants in wastewater.
  • Develop efficient remediation technologies for crude oil contaminated soils and water of the Albertine graben,Uganda.
  • Investigate seasonal fluxes, sources and trophic transfer of microplastics within the aquatic ecosystem of Lake Victoria and RiverNile.

Research areas

  • Conservation studies of Lake Victoria (Macro and micro plastic pollution.
  • Persistent organic pollutants, biofilters and chemo-filters.
  • Value addition in food chains of Moringa and gooseberry
  • Quality water access models in Lake Victoria basin and AlbertinegrabeMasters and PhD Scholarships 2022

Family Group Foundation scholarships Information 2021

Family Group Foundation will spend KES 30 million on scholarships for students from needy backgrounds joining form 1 this year.

The funds, channeled through the Family Group Foundation 2021 High School Scholarship Program, will benefit more than 100 students in 11 counties who are transitioning from primary to secondary school having received their KCPE exams results.

“Every year, many students from underprivileged backgrounds fail to join secondary schools for lack of financial resources. It is projected that this year, the situation could even be worse thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic that has ravaged our economy and seen many families lose their income, and as such, will struggle to pay school fees for their children,” said Family Bank CEO Rebecca Mbithi.

She added that the disorientation of the education sector that included a 9-month halt of learning in schools due to lockdowns has also greatly impacted many students psychologically meaning the students need more support than ever before.

According to data from the Ministry of Education, a total of 20,000 students comprising Grade 4, Class 8 and Form 4 students failed to report back to school and a total of 2,543 KCPE candidates failed to sit for the exam.

“As a foundation, through our education pillar, we will be able to offer bright and needy students the opportunity to pursue and successfully complete secondary education. This will provide relief to parents struggling to meet tuition needs and greatly contributing to the 100 per cent transition policy put in place by the Ministry of Education,” she added.

The awarded scholarships will cater for both tuition and upkeep for the beneficiaries in the 11 counties. The target counties include Bungoma, Kisumu, Kiambu, Kajiado, Mombasa, Makueni, Meru, Muranga, Nakuru, Nyeri and Uasin Gishu.

How to Apply

Interested candidates from these counties can apply by acquiring an application form from the nearest Family Bank branch, Sub-County branch or the Family Group Foundation website.

To date, the Foundation has invested over KES 150 million in the education sector through scholarships and also supporting inclusive education for children living with autism.

The Wings to Fly scholarship program, an initiative of the Equity Group and Mastercard Foundation (MCF), was established to support secondary education for top performing children from financially challenged backgrounds. With support from other partners, the program offers access to leadership training to previously marginalized children in all counties.

The program offers comprehensive support for the scholars through provision of tuition fees, accommodation, books, uniform, shopping, pocket money and transport to and from school during their 4 years of secondary education. It has so far supported 26,304 bright but economically challenged scholars. MCF has so far committed to support 10,000 scholars through two phases of funding with the last intake joining the program in 2021.

The Equity scholarship program was formed to aid high performing children hailing from less fortunate backgrounds. The program beneficiaries are selected from across Kenya’s 47 counties, based on their performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination. Awareness of the program is conveyed through public forums i.e. administrative chief’s forums, places of worship, through radio announcements and social media channels. Application is made at all Equity Bank branches, Equity Agents and on the Equity Group Foundation’s Website. Beneficiaries of the scholarship are selected by the Community Scholarship Selection Board (CSSB), which is made up of key leaders in the community and is chaired by the County or sub-County Director of Education.

The Wings to Fly mentorship program supports a scholar’s holistic development through four facets; encouraging academic excellence, developing a value-centered life, nurturing transformative leadership and embracing a culture of giving back.

Mentorship is offered at three different capacities:

  • University student mentors carry out school visits and monitor academic performance. They are mainly alumni of the program.
  • Through forums facilitated by CSSBs and Equity Bank, parents, guardians and Equity Bank staff engage with mentors and scholars. These are career talks and giveback activities that aim to impact the community positively.
  • In the Annual Education and Leadership Congress, cohorts of Wings to Fly scholars come together for week-long intensive, inspiring and educative forums where they get to learn from the role models in society such as successful professionals, government persons, entrepreneurs, and community leaders.
